Clinics – Festiglace 2020

Clinics for all skill levels and tastes will be given during the event. Whether you are a beginner, intermediate, confirmed, whether you want to initiate yourself in mixed climbing, make the leap and start to lead, or even improve your skills in alpine routes, we have the clinic for you. They will be given voluntarily by renowned and experienced people. Register, places are limited!

FRIDAY CLINICS

The alpine transition clinic consists of becoming familiar with an exposed alpine engagement on several pitches. The clinic consists of showing participants the realities that await them on alpine routes. Multi-pitch relay techniques, knot techniques, abseiling and progressions on these exposed routes will be taught.
This clinic will be given by Ian Welsted. After 25 years of experience guiding in various places, Ian Welsted is not only a foremost and advanced alpine climber, but also one of the two Canadians to receive a Piolet d’or, namely for his first ascent of K6, Pakistan.

This clinic takes place on a vertical wall of ice. Techniques of progression, positioning, and various advice will be given to you in order to be able to climb these walls, which often require a sustained effort, and therefore management of one’s energy. Experience required. The clinic will be given by Nathalie Fortin. Natalie Fortin has many years of experience and has climbed many ice walls in North America. She is also known for its climbs and expeditions; especially on Everest in 2012.

Mixed climbing is definitely one of the most difficult and technical forms of climbing. It requires physical and mental strength to achieve this type of climbing. During this clinic, various techniques will be presented in order to give participants enough knowledge and confidence to climb mixed routes. This clinic is for people who already ice climb and want to start mixed climbing. This clinic will be given by Marcus Garcia. Marcus is an all-around climber with over 25 years of experience, and has established over 200 new routes, including everything from traditional, sport, and mixed climbing. However, his biggest accomplishment and legacy is not how hard he can push himself, but what he passes on to the next generation of climbers as a coach and mentor. As lead coach for youth Team USA Ice Climbing, Marcus is helping develop the next generation of Olympic Caliber athletes.

SATURDAY CLINICS

If you’ve always wanted to try ice climbing, this is your chance! Boots, crampons, helmet, harness and tools will be provided. You’ll learn the basics, the moves and how to drive your tools into the ice. As a belayer, you’ll be shown what to do and what not, in a secure and efficient way. This clinic will be organized by Parcours Aventure, a climbing school from Quebec.

This clinic is for those who are already having ice climbing experience and who wish to improve their skills. Various advanced techniques will be taught. The walls will be steeper and the level of engagement will be more intense. The clinic will be given by Carl. Darveau. Carl is a climber with many years of experience. It has opened up new avenues, notably at the Pont-Rouge site. Recently he returned from an expedition to Cerro Torres, Patagonia.

This clinic will be given by Andres Marin. Andres was born in Colombia living in Ouray for quite some time. He is a guide and started climbing at the age of 14. He has the opportunity to explore all types of climbing. From international competitions to remote expeditions and everything in between.

This clinic will provide a solid base for those who want to lead their first route and are already comfortable in ice climbing. Techniques such rappelling with Abalakov or how and where to position your screws will be shown so that you can lead climb calmly and safely.
