Description

Are you an ice climber looking to expand your possibilities by taking on the challenge of combining rock and ice? Want to demystify and learn dry tooling techniques such as the Yaniro (Figure 4, Figure 9)?

This mixed climbing and dry tooling clinic in Pont-Rouge is designed for climbers who wish to discover or deepen their understanding of this demanding discipline, practiced on the site’s natural rock faces.

A great opportunity to learn how to “think feet first, arms second”!

Program

Introduction and adjustment of specialized equipment
(technical ice tools, blade types, crampons)
Placement, pulling, and body movement techniques
Managing transitions, balance, and route reading
Learning and understanding Yaniro techniques (Figure 4, Figure 9)
Safety concepts and risk management
Hands-on practice on routes adapted to participants’ level

This clinic emphasizes progressive learning, safety, and fun in a controlled and stimulating environment.

Learning Objectives

Gradually develop technical skills in mixed terrain and dry tooling
Acquire the safety fundamentals to climb with confidence and efficiency

PREREQUISITES

Advanced ice climbers – WI4 to WI6
Ability to belay on top-rope
Good overall physical condition

Schedule

8:00 a.m.: Meet at parking lot P1 (Festiglace reception area) – you will be greeted by the volunteer assigned to your clinic, who will guide the group down into the canyon to pick up your equipment from our partners.

8:30 a.m.: Meet your guide at the reception area in the exhibitors’ village (down in the canyon).

Please be on time so that the group can pick up the equipment and get the most out of the clinic.

Equipment

Required (personal or borrowed)

  • Harness, helmet
  • Ice tool(s) and crampons
  • Mixed climbing blades
  • Warm and waterproof clothing (Gore-Tex)
  • Several pairs of gloves
  • Thermos, snacks or lunch
  • Insulated jacket, base layers, hot pad

Gear loan – Exhibitor Village (from 7:30 a.m.)

Mammut: boots, helmets, harnesses, full avalanche kit
Petzl: ice tools, crampons, helmets, harnesses
CAMP: ice tools, crampons
La Sportiva: boots
Black Diamond: crampons, helmets, harnesses, avalanche kit

Tyler Kempney is a world-class ice and mixed climber. Three-time Ouray champion and two-time European Cup champion.

He is best known for his smile and his dedication to helping everyone reach their full potential. Tyler is taking a break from competition this season to reconnect with his love for the mountains and focus on training and community development.
